About the department

The Department of Swedish offers an array of undergraduate courses, master courses, and postgraduate courses. We have a Master’s programme in Swedish as a Second Language, admitting new students every term. Three research disciplines lead up to a Ph.D. degree: Nordic Languages, Swedish as a Second Language, and Computational Linguistics. We also have a doctoral school in Swedish as a Second Language, leading up to a licentiate degree. The school deals with language and learning in a multicultural society, and it is run in collaboration with Stockholm University and Södertörn University College.

If Swedish is not your first language, and if you would like to improve your ability to write and speak our language, you can choose one of the courses in Swedish as a Foreign Language. You can also take courses that will give you the knowledge in Swedish that is required for further studies at the university. Then you have to take the so-called Tisus test.

If you are interested in becoming a teacher of Swedish or Swedish for Young Children we offer special courses for future teachers of Swedish together with the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion.

At the Department of Swedish, research is pursued in many areas. We focus for instance on lexicography/lexicology, language technology, and Swedish as a Second Language. The Institute for Swedish as a Second Language (ISA) and the Language Bank are two divisions established especially for education and research in Swedish as a Second Language and for the collecting and processing of big corpora (the Language Bank).

If you want to know more about our courses and programmes, please contact the student counsellor, take a look at the course catalogue or visit us at the Department.
